John Grubensky

1959 - 1991

John Grubensky was an Oakland Police Officer at the time of the city’s horrific fire in 1991. He died while trying to rescue a family from the scalding flames of their home. He is remembered for his deep love of all growing things, his devotion to his family, his humble willingness to risk his life for others (which he did during the infamous 1989 earthquake as well), and his ever-present bravery and commitment to service and justice.
