Mother Wright

1921 – 2009

Though she had very little material wealth, Mother Wright used what she had to feed Oakland’s impoverished and homeless populations for nearly 30 years. U.S. Congresswoman Barbara Lee called Mother Wright “Oakland’s Mother Teresa – a humanitarian who was an advocate for the poor and homeless.” Like Mother Teresa, Mother Wright felt that serving the hungry and homeless was her spiritual calling; her life’s mission. She founded The Mary Ann Wright Foundation, which still serves 450 people each day.
